Alex has spent his career investing in and successfully growing entrepreneurial for-profit and non-profit organizations that seek to drive financial and/or social impact.
Alex currently serves as interim head of the Lookout Foundation, the social impact arm of Lookout, a leading mobile security software company, where Alex leads Lookout’s grantmaking, corporate social impact and employee engagement programs.
Prior to Lookout, Alex spent four years as Vice President of Strategic Partnerships & Communications at Tides, a global philanthropic partner and nonprofit accelerator that facilitates effective grantmaking and impact investing for individual and institutional donors and also provides nonprofit management services to hundreds of nonprofit organizations nationwide. Alex created and led Tides’ marketing, communications and new client development efforts and served on Tides’ Executive Team. Alex was previously Director of Innovation Investments and Portfolio Director at the Skoll Foundation, leading the signature Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship global grant-making program.
Alex serves as founding Chairman and President of Excelerator Foundation and its predecessor non-profit organization, a role that he has held for over 28 years. Excelerate supports innovative non-profit organizations that drive positive change in the areas of social entrepreneurship, health, the environment and community development.
Alex spent 18 years as senior investment professional at several leading venture capital firms including Expansion Capital Partners, JPMorgan Partners and Hambrecht & Quist’s venture unit. He started his investment career at the Vietnam Fund Management Company, managing one of the first venture funds in Vietnam. He invested in and guided innovative private companies from seed stage through IPO/acquisition in a variety of technology sectors. Alex began his career as a Presidential appointee serving as Aide to the Administrator at the US Agency for International Development.
Alex’s recent volunteer nonprofit work includes serving for six years on the Steering Committee of the EYElliance, a global collaboration of leading non-profit and for-profit actors in the eye care industry that seeks to expand access to low-cost eye care for lowest income consumers. Alex also served for five years on the board of the Grass Roots Gay Rights Foundation in San Francisco.
Alex often lectures and speaks on industry panels on effective philanthropy, impact reporting and storytelling, social entrepreneurship, and impact investing.
Alex earned a B.A. degree in International Relations and Asian Studies from Tulane University, studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and holds an MBA from Cornell University.
